Up until recently having a mobile page offered little in the way of advanced rankings with Google. However, Google have given explicit advice recently that websites with issues for mobile devices might not rank as well, in the future. You can understand why when Google want to give the best user experience possible for their users. Why would they send traffic to a non optimized page only for the user to get frustrated and click away?
